Earning Income From a Side Hustle? The CRA Might Be Watching!

Did you know that about 40% of millennials in Canada are part of the gig economy? The number is mixed between millennials who seek gigs or freelance work for passive or part-time income or people who rely on it for their primary income. It includes freelance office work, babysitting, house sitting, personal assistance services, paid work through online platforms, etc. But that doesn’t even come near the full spectrum of what you might call a “side hustle.” Earning income from things like Airbnb , ride-sharing, renting out your vehicle, parking space, and others might all come under the definition of a side hustle … and the CRA wants its cut. The CRA wants its due The CRA is worried about all the new ways of earning income (and potential income tax dollars) that might be slipping through the cracks. The tighter observation and a closer eye on crypto traders is one example of how the CRA is tightening the circle around taxpayers who might be under-reporting their income. Now, the department might do the same with freelancers and gig workers. It might be quite easy for the CRA to track the income and contract details when freelancers leverage platforms to connect with potential employers. These platforms, by design, keep their own cut (usually around 20%) from a freelancing job. The taxation on top of it is a variable that freelancers will have to “plug in” when pricing a job. Carrie French earns about $125,000 annually writing product descriptions. Beau Vallis earns a similar amount remixing music. The one thing both have in common? Fiverr , a side hustle platform that used to urge sellers to list their services for just $5, increasingly delivers six-figure incomes to the freelancers doing the work. “It’s been very lucrative,” says Vallis, who first posted a digital profile on Fiverr in 2015. “You don’t have to do any marketing. You wake up and there are your jobs.” At a time when freelancers who work for other gig economy giants, such as Uber and Lyft , say that the legacy companies are becoming increasingly exploitative, Fiverr has gone in the opposite direction. The site boosted its customer service staff; cut its fees; and created special designations for “pros,” or freelancers with advanced expertise or skills. While some sellers still list their services for less than $25 on Fiverr, “pros” are compelled to charge more. Six-figure incomes It’s all part of a strategy to make Fiverr the go-to network for both freelancers and customers in a rapidly evolving freelance marketplace, says Gali Arnon, the platform’s chief marketing officer. “The platform has evolved tremendously and so has the marketplace,” Arnon says. “We started with $5 because it was a way of eliminating the risk [for customers] of buying digital services. Below are some key findings from the research report: The pandemic identified the opportunity of remote work for professional services jobs across every industry: on average, 22.9% of workers across all “traditional industries” were remote as of January, 2021. The opportunity to engage remote freelancers in industries outside of tech is significant: Upwork estimates that 37% of, or about 25.7 million jobs in “non-tech industries” in the U.S. could be done by remote freelancers. Companies in these “non-tech industries” are already embracing remote freelancers: when looking at Upwork’s largest clients, as measured by spend, over 25% are “non-tech clients”. Upwork’s 100 largest non-tech clients are working with remote freelancers across many areas of their business: 35% of businesses are hiring freelancers in web, mobile, and software development as measured by spend. Followed by 12.1% in sales and marketing and 11.7% in customer service. Companies continue to realize the benefits of engaging remote freelancers: among the 100 largest non-tech clients that were also on Upwork in 2019, total spending grew by 44.2% in 2020. How Freelancers in Singapore Can Save for Retirement

Saving for retirement can often be an anxiety-inducing topic. With 14% of Singapore’s labor force reported to be self-employed in 2020 (World Bank), the question about how to save for retirement as a freelancer could not be more relevant than it is now. While the most obvious answer to the above question is to put money aside, there are many ways of doing it. You can simply decide to set aside a percentage of your monthly income, to invest it, or to put it in a savings account. Each option, however, largely depends on your income, retirement age, and current financial situation. Set Up a Retirement Plan In order to set up a retirement plan, you need to answer the following questions: After answering these questions, you will get an idea as to how much you need to save. The current retirement age in Singapore is 62 years, and will increase to 63 years in 2022. While this may not affect your retirement age as a freelancer, for the sake of retirement planning we will use the official retirement age. The table above assumes individual monthly expenses in retirement to be S$1,793 (Singstat). Overall spend in retirement is also based on a life expectancy of 83 years. An additional factor we need to consider are healthcare expenses. All self-employed Singapore citizens and permanent residents need to make compulsory contributions to their Medisave Account if they are making more than S$6,000. In addition to making compulsory contributions to your Medisave Account, you can choose to make voluntary contributions. The great benefit of voluntary contributions is that you can claim tax reliefs for those contributions to lower your overall tax expense. Set a Goal and Save The simplest way to save for retirement is to calculate your monthly income and monthly expenses and decide on a realistic amount you can set aside for retirement monthly. This should typically be a certain percentage of your monthly income rather than a fixed amount. Calculate when you want to retire and how much you would spend on average monthly after you retire. Average household monthly expenses in Singapore are S$3,586 (Singstat), assuming the household size is two people. This implies individual monthly expenses of S$1,793. It is also important to remember that there will be several expenses you will no longer have to worry about in retirement, such as your tax expense, your Medisave Account contributions, health insurance, children’s tuition costs, work-related expenses and possibly even life insurance premiums.
